Just after our national Level 4 lockdown last year, we came together to create something to look forward to, something that would highlight our amazing landscape, boost our vibrant community, and celebrate the things we know and love best: books, art and people. Thus, Create Mackenzie Book & Art Festival was born.

The Mackenzie Region has long been the muse of many a writer and artist, home to stargazers and mountaineers, explorers and scientists, authors and artisans. We already have a richness of culture and history in the region, and we are so proud to have attracted more of New Zealand’s finest poets, artists, sculptors and authors for the festival.

While Create spans three weekends and makes the most of our unique and expansive geography with events in Fairlie, Kimbell, Tekapo and Twizel, it is a boutique festival celebrating land and people. This programme has an exciting mix of free and ticketed events, events that you can do in your own time – as well as events that are guaranteed to sell out, so don’t wait to get tickets!

We encourage all visitors to the region to take their time and soak it all in. Enjoy the vast plains of the Mackenzie – watch the light change on the Southern Alps as the sun sets and the stars appear as night falls in our International Dark Sky Reserve.

Plunge into our glacial lakes and meet other book and art lovers in our fantastic cafes and restaurants.

Experience, engage, enjoy.

Meet The Team

The festival is brought to you by the powerhouse of

Renee Rowland

Renee is the owner of two independent sister bookshops in the South Canterbury Community: The Twizel Bookshop & Timaru Booksellers. When not in a bookshop, you may catch Renee trying to finish knitting a homespun jersey she started 15 years ago.

Wilma van den Bosch

Wilma is the owner of Petronella’s Gallery and Bookstore in Lake Tekapo. Her shelves feature a mixture of new-release and classic books. When Wilma isn’t selling books or reading, she wanders the lands around Lake Tekapo looking for miromiro.

Prue Blake

Prue is the owner of Artspace Tekapo, a gallery with an eclectic selection of paintings, sculptures, jewellery, speciality clothing and other interesting pieces for sale. When not discovering new artists, you will find Prue on her bike, searching for a new trail to explore.

Hollie Woodhouse

Hollie is the designer behind Mountain House Creative, a Tekapo-based graphic and web design studio that is passionate about creating content solutions for businesses big and small. When not designing, you can find hollie running or biking around NZ's magic landscape.
