John Hearnshaw

Before his retirement in 2014 John Hearnshaw was lecturer and professor at the University of Canterbury and served 25 of those years as director of Mt John Observatory at Lake Tekapo.

He was the chair of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve board, a charity that helps maintain dark skies in the Mackenzie District in the central South Island of New Zealand.

In 2021 he published the New Zealand Dark Skies Handbook, a manual for those interested in maintaining dark skies and promoting astro-tourism.
